Welcome to the TIPS Lab!

Using personality science to transform mental health care.

The Treatment Innovations for Psychological Services (TIPS) Lab studies how personality shapes mental health, as well as how intentional changes in personality can improve emotional well-being, relationships, and daily functioning.

Although effective treatments exist for many common mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder (BPD), far too few people receive evidence-based care. Our goal is to bridge advances in personality science and clinical psychology to develop psychological interventions that are more effective, personalized, and accessible.Despite the existence of effective treatments for many common mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder), only a fraction of patients receive research-supported care.

Our research focuses on four complementary aims:

  • Understanding personality-based mechanisms that contribute to anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, and other emotional disorders.
  • Developing and testing evidence-based treatments that directly target these core mechanisms rather than individual diagnoses alone.
  • Personalizing psychological care by identifying which treatment strategies are most effective for which individuals, improving both treatment outcomes and implementation in community practice.
  • Advancing research on understudied and stigmatized conditions, particularly borderline personality disorder, while translating scientific discoveries into practical tools that improve people's lives.
